Exchange rates
The local currency is the Eastern Caribbean (EC) Dollar.  The EC dollar is used in all 9 islands of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States.  It is one of the most stable currencies in the world and has been viewed with great interest by the European Community.   The conversation rate is US$1.00 = EC$2.67.

Banking
Banks open at 8.00 a.m. and close at 1.00 p.m., except on Fridays when they open until 5.00 p.m.

Time Zone
We are in the Atlantic Standard Time zone.  This is the same as Eastern Standard Time from April through October, but one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time for the rest of the year.

Temperatures
Temperatures range from 64 degrees Fahrenheit/18 degrees Centigrade to 90 degrees Fahrenheit/32 degrees Centigrade.  There is little variation throughout the year, except that the coolest months of the year are November through February.  The mornings and evenings are very comfortable.  The hours of 10.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. are the warmest.   There is a "wet" or rainy season (July - November) and a "dry" season (December - June).  You may wear shorts and other casual clothing, but do not go into restaurants in bathing attire.  Jackets and ties are rarely ever seen and are not required for dining out or even for church gatherings.

Electricity
220/240 volts at 50 cycles per second, but most hotels have 110 volts, 60 cycle converters, but it is best to bring your own for shaving sets and appliances.

Telephones
We have a good telephone system, but calls to the US are around US$1.20 per minute.  The local area code is 784 and you dial "01" before calling a number in the US.  If dialing from the US to St. Vincent, we have 1-plus dialing.  Cable & Wireless had a monopoly on telephone service, but this ended in March 2001.

Medical Facilities
We have well trained physicians and nurses.  Both the UK and US are actively recruiting our nurses, who are very well trained.  The main hospital is in Kingstown, but there are additional clinics in the city as well as in towns around the island.

Water
Our water is of high quality because it is cleansed as it percolates through our soil that is a sandy loam.  It is soft, because of an absence of limestone in our soil.  Bottled water is widely available for those who prefer it.
